Hosta - Specimen Every Hosta can stand alone in the garden. Some have very unique traits such as leaf colour, leaf shape or flower habit which make them stand out as specimens. From small to large, gold to blue there is a suitable specimen for your garden or patio container.
Hosta 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd'Height 45cm. (1 1/2') Spread 60cm. (2'). The name of this tokudama type Hosta says it all "DRINKING GOURD". The frosty blue leaves cup and have a long petiole to form a large cup-shaped funnel. It even holds water! (Walden-West 1992) |
Hosta 'Blue Whirls'Height 50cm. (1 1/2') Spread 75cm. (2 1/2'). The frosted blue-green leaves are pointed and lance-shaped. The open, vase shape appears circular when you look at it from above. This Hosta is great in the garden and performs well in most any situation! (Aden 1978) |

Hosta fluctans 'Variegated'Height 75cm. (2 1/2') Spread 60cm. (2'). This is "The Hosta" and considered to be the number one Hosta among most Hosta collectors. It has a distinctive upright vase-shape with long oval leaves that reach skywards. The foliage is moss green with frosty green hues and a creamy edge. They are smooth and silk-like to look at. Hosta 'Fragrant Bouquet'Height 45cm. (1 1/2') Spread 55cm. (1 3/4'). This Hosta has large white flowers with a gardenia-like fragrance in mid summer. Not only are the flowers attractive but the foliage is a standout! The leaves are bright apple green in colour, smooth in texture, and highlighted with a broad creamy white edge. Hosta 'Golden Medallion'Height 35cm. (1') Spread 50cm. (1 1/2'). This is a sport of Hosta tokudama 'Aureonebulosa'. The foliage is heavily textured and puckered, round and cup shaped, and is an incredible yellow with copper highlights. This Hosta is very distinctive and highly recommended. |

Hosta 'Green Piecrust'Height 70cm. (2 1/4') Spread 1.2M. (4'). This Hosta has olive green leaves with a beautiful wavy edge that does look like a piecrust edge. It can be used as a groundcover but the effect of the distinctive leaf edge on this plant would be lost. The violet flowers are produced in late spring. (Williams l986) |
Hosta hypoleucaHeight 35cm. (1') Spread 65cm. (2'). This slow growing Hosta is unique. The leaves are a pale frosty green with a white reverse. The smooth leaves have strong veins and have a tendency to cascade. This Hosta is excellent with larger ferns or for an Oriental style garden. |

Hosta montana 'Aureo-marginata'Height 60cm. (2') Spread 75cm. (2 1/2'). The leaves have a deep glossy forest green center with an irregular gold edge, the gold overlaps the green creating an interesting intermediate colouring. The foliage is long and spade-shaped with a prominent point. This is one of the first Hostas to emerge in the spring. |
Hosta 'Moon Glow'Height 50cm. (1 1/2') Spread 75cm. (2 1/2'). The round leaves are slightly cupped and are luminescent yellow trimmed with a fine white edge. The combination makes this medium sized Hosta glow in the dark. (Anderson 1977) |

Hosta 'Royal Standard'Height 60cm. (2') Spread 1 M. (4'). The leaves are a lustrous shamrock-green. The pure white flowers are highly scented as Hosta plantaginea is one of its parents. Hosta tokudama 'Buckshaw Blue'Height 40cm. (1 1/2') Spread 45cm. (1 1/2'). This is a beautiful blue tokudama, bluer than the species. It has round, cupped, intensely corrugated blue-green durable foliage. The near white flowers are produced in late spring. |
